Keep your cell phone calls private and secure by encrypting them with a free app

encrypted-calls-logoWith all the news about the NSA spying on the communications of everyday Americans, one could easily become paranoid about using  a smart phone to make a voice call.

But what most people don’t realize is that the NSA isn’t the only entity that actively spies on us. With the right combination of hardware and software, a crook that lives just down the street or a hacker that lives in a far-away place can intercept your private calls as well.

There are steps you can take to keep your phone calls private however. At the top of the list is encrypting your calls so they cannot be understood even if they happen to be intercepted.

If you use an iPhone, you can use the Signal iOS app to encrypt your voice calls. Android users can use the RedPhone app. Both apps are free of charge, and they can be used together. That’s right, an iPhone user with the Signal iOS app installed can talk securely over an encrypted voice connection with someone using an Android phone that has RedPhone installed!

Of course it goes without saying that iPhones can talk to iPhones and Android phones can talk to Android phones as well. But whatever the configuration, both phones must have the appropriate app installed in order to establish an encrypted (secure) connection.

iPhone users can download the Signal iOS app for free from iTunes. If your phone is an Android, download the free RedPhone app from the Google Play Store.
